Nutrition And The Brain

By January 21, 2013 No Comments

I want to start the New Year off by talking to you about nutrition.  When we eat properly we heal our bodies and more importantly our brains.  What I am sharing with you applies not only to our children but to all of us as well.

The gut is our second brain and when that isn’t working right our brain is unable to function at an optimal level.  You need to look at digestion as more than food just being processed in the stomach.

What you put in your mouth will decide how much energy, focus and concentration you will have throughout your day.

Here are 4 nutrition tips for you:

1. If you want more concentration increase your protein intake.  Have your children eat eggs, meat or fish. If your children are not allergic to nuts incorporate nuts into their diet. The brain  actually releases a chemical L-Tyrosine an amino acid that helps levels of concentration focus and alertness. Protein also helps the body heal itself.  I recommend that you start each meal by consuming protein first.

2. If you want to feel calm, eat carbohydrates. If you eat carbohydrates first your brain will release L-Tryptophan, which produces a calming effect. So it’s best to eat a carb at night.

3. Pay attention to what you eat. If you crave cheese your body is probably wanting salt. Salt is needed in a diet those who cut salt out can have thyroid issues.

4. Start listening to what your body is telling you to eat.  If your body is not stressed and relaxed it will tell you what it needs and won’t go into survival mode. When we are stressed we go into over sensory mode and we are unable to listen to what our body is telling us.

Next time you or your child start feeling stressed, stop what you are doing and take a break.  Get up walk around and get a drink of water or go outside and play!  Getting exercise will work wonders and even just a short break will help to ease the stress mode you are in.
